About the Miss Gay America Organization
Miss Gay America began in 1972 at The Watch Your Hat and Coat Saloon in Nashville, TN, where Norman Jones (a.k.a. Norma Kristie) became the first-ever titleholder. Founded by Jerry Peak, the pageant aimed to celebrate the art of female illusion. After winning the title, Norman Jones purchased the pageant in 1975, dedicating 30 years to growing it into the most prestigious and respected competition for female impersonators. Today, Miss Gay America is the longest-running and most esteemed pageant of its kind, now owned by Mad Angel Entertainment.
Known as the “Symbol of Excellence,” Miss Gay America sets the standard for professionalism, entertainment, and artistry in female impersonation. Contestants showcase their abilities through categories like talent, evening gown, on-stage question, and personal interview, ensuring a well-rounded representative of the system.
With nearly 30 state and regional preliminaries leading to the national competition, the system is highly structured and competitive. Each year, winners and first alternates from these preliminaries advance to nationals for four days of intense competition, culminating in a Top 10 showdown for the crown.
Miss Gay America continues to thrive as a platform for excellence, attracting audiences from all backgrounds who appreciate the dedication, artistry, and talent required to achieve this esteemed title.
