August 2008 Edition Of

"The Excellence"

Mikaila's Mirror

I have found so many new beginnings the fast few months. I have been honored to meet former sisters and new sisters. The month was filled with four prelims and each one was amazing in its own special way. I just want to stress again, how honored and what a blessing and privilege it has been traveling the country representing a title that is so looked up to…

No one said it was going to be an easy journey I have learned a lot and still continue too each day. Soon my time will be coming to an end and the next man will have to step up to the plate and leave his mark. Speaking of mark, I was so happy to be with the DC family and enjoy a lovely Fourth of July making our mark in history with those in the national’s capital. Miss Gay DC America was a great contest they had three contestants…each of them were so strong and made it a close race… TOWN opened their doors to us and the night was a memorable one for Victoria Parker as she crowned the next Miss Gay DC America, Victoria DePaula and her first alternate Jessica Jade. I was blessed to be in town early and get to work with our first alternate to Miss Gay East Coast Kristina Kelly,  as well at APEX thanks girl! Then the real true love of how far a promoter will go to help a friend showed on Monday. I woke up and my face had swelled so much, that I could not fly. Robert and Blake put me up in their home for a week and took care of me like I was their child. I cried and was in so much pain, but they made sure I had my pudding and juice all week until I was good and healed…

Then, I was off to Michelle, with Miss Gay Pennsylvania America and all the formers… We had a great time… they had a huge group of guys competing for the title and more than half of them were new. I was so pleased to see and hear how happy she was to have new blood in their system. In the end Vicky Dominatrix captured the title Miss Gay Pennsylvania America, along with her first alternate Domiana Dupre St. James. It was a close pageant by one point, proving that you have to dot all I’s and cross all T’s. I was so happy for both of them and they both will represent Michelle and the State of Pennsylvania , well at the nationals. I did have a weird experience there… we went to the bar restaurant across the street and one of the people with us had to put on a bar shirt because he had a tank top on… It was very odd… We didn’t stay long, lol. But, it was a great time… as we battled rain and then laughed about it later. I met new friends and made alot of memories. Thank you to the staff and management at Liquid 891 for all your help and support.

Ohio America was a lot of fun, as it was the next stop on my list. They welcomed me with a huge homemade dinner and got me all filled up with good foods. They are such a close group it and it was very homey like, most of the groups of formers that I have met as I have traveled. It’s really a great thing to have the support of formers and to see them continue the traditions they started. It was great to work with Jade’ and to help her crown our next Miss Gay Ohio America, which went to Hellin Bedd and her first alternate, Beverly Ford. The venue was lovely Thank you to Axis Night Club for allowing us to take over your venue for three days. I received nothing but positive feedback from everyone and how lovely the contest was. Thank you to Nick and Aaron for an amazing time and making sure I had everything… and tons of funJ. I was also lucky to finally meet Miss EOY at the time, Dee Ranged… she was a hoot and came to support the girls.

Now as I’m typing I am currently sitting in St. Louis where we just finished Miss Gay Missouri America. It was the biggest prelim I have had yet to date. I must say it was a huge turn out with twenty-eight contestants and they had a lot of formers to come back to represent as well. Tumara and Jade did an outstanding job with putting together a large pageant and I was so proud of all of the girls. Thank you to The Grey Fox for hosting prelim nights… we made it a tight squeeze with time but we had a great time. The final night was in The Millennium Hotel which is such a blessing to also be home for the nationals, Miss Gay America 2009. Congrats to Sparkle Iman, our new Miss Gay Missouri America and Tabbi Katt, her first alternate. Both of them have Miss Gay America in their own back yard. The support from formers the staff and the organization of everything blew me away. I had such a great time and was so honored to be a part of their family for the week. Thank you Tumara for making the week lovely… the great opening costume was beautiful.

I was lucky to be able to hang out in St. Louis the past couple of days with Miss Midwest right around the corner at The Complex on Friday August 1st. It’s going to be an exciting time.  I hope alot of the girls, that were contestants in Missouri , come back to enter… I must say being a national title holder is a lot of work and many people thought I couldn’t do it. Thank you to those who had faith in me and have turned to now do have faith in me. Its hard work and everyone grows from what they learn every day. I’m still growing, asking questions and helping the system to become better. We are about to be rounding out our year soon and continue to have more interest. Keep an eye on the website for new prelims to be announced in the next week. This month of August is packed with 7 prelims and I am very excited to see who are representatives are going to be.

Until Next Time Peace Love and Hair grease. XOXO

Much Love

From the desk of Larry & Terry

Where has the season gone? It is difficult to believe that in just slightly more than two months, we will crown the 39th man honored to be called Miss Gay America. It may seem confusing, considering that this will be the 37th annual Miss Gay America pageant, but there was one Miss Gay America (1976-Shan Covington) who was “dethroned” and then there was the untimely death of Miss Gay America 1995-Ramona Le Ger’. We continue to be amazed at how the Miss Gay America pageant system has touched the lives of so many… In fact, no matter where we go, we constantly meet those who know about the system…many of which who have an “up close and personal” story… In the midst of all of the madness of managing the national pageant system, it is always nice to hear of those who have been so touched by the Miss Gay America pageant system. No matter where the road ends for female impersonators, most would give anything to have been a Miss Gay America titleholder. It is also very humbling to see the eyes of the contestants, when at various preliminary pageants, they watch the reigning Miss Gay America, in awe, as they truly want to be the next Miss Gay America.  The sad reality is that only few will ever capture the title. Most competitors will eventually give up or move on to other things, when they see that winning this national contest is not easy. In fact, most say that the title of Miss Gay America is the most difficult to win.

It is heartbreaking, to see contestants (who really want to win a preliminary), not win. Each contestant puts so much into his competition package, then to not win, is very difficult for many, including promoters. But, we hope that with every loss, comes growth. Perhaps not always growth as a competitor, which is always a certainty, but growth as an entertainer and a person. When we compete, we choose to put forth our best effort. Some of us are successful when we offer our best, and some are not, but win or loose, the competition experience should strengthen us. As contestants qualify, we trust that they will take heed to the advice of the judges and prepare a competition package for which they can be proud. As promoters who choose to be pageant coaches are busily preparing their contest representatives for the nationals, we look forward seeing the Miss Gay America family… The Miss Gay America pageant has grown to be more than a competition…it is also a “family gathering”. From the promoters, to the former Miss Gay America titleholder, to the audience, the week of October 8-12, 2008 in St. Louis Missouri is sure to be a great week. And at the conclusion of the competition, no matter who will serve as the 37th annual Miss Gay America, we trust that the next pageant season will be a dynamic and exciting as this pageant season. Mikaila Kay-Miss Gay America 2008 is truly working in the best interest of the pageant season and we are excited to watch Mikaila, as he makes his very positive mark on the incredible legacy of the Miss Gay America pageant system.

Until next time…
Larry and Terry
